Mumbai Port Authority Observes National Fire Service Day, Pays Solemn Tribute to the Martyrs of the 1944 Bombay Dock Explosion

In a deeply respectful and dignified ceremony, the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) commemorated National Fire Service Day on 14th April 2026, paying homage to the brave firefighters and personnel who lost their lives in the catastrophic Bombay Docks Explosion of 1944. The solemn event took place at the historic Fire Memorial at Victoria Docks, where the sacrifices of the martyrs of the SS Fort Stikine tragedy continue to be remembered with honour.

The ceremony was led by Shri Adesh Titarmare, IAS, Deputy Chairperson, Mumbai Port Authority, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Prominent dignitaries in attendance included Shri Santosh S. Warik, Director, Maharashtra Fire Service, and Shri Ravindra N. Ambulgekar, Chief Fire Officer, Mumbai Fire Brigade, along with senior officials from MbPA, representatives of Maharashtra Fire Services, CISF, BARC, HPCL, MIDC, RCF, Naval Dockyard Fire Services, and Aegis Logistics.

The observance began at 7:45 a.m. with the ceremonial fall-in of all firefighting platoons, followed by the arrival of dignitaries. The gathering was addressed by Shri I.S. Chaddha, Chief Fire Officer, MbPA, and Shri Sarbodaman Mukherjee, who narrated the historical significance of National Fire Service Day-an annual tribute to the valiant personnel who laid down their lives combating the devastating explosion aboard SS Fort Stikine on 14 April 1944 at No.1 Victoria Dock.

The wreath-laying ceremony, led by the Chief Guest and accompanied by senior fire officials, served as a powerful reminder of the courage and commitment of India’s firefighting community. The sounding of the Last Post and Reveille added solemnity to the event, honouring the memory of the fallen heroes.

Dignitaries later visited a curated exhibition showcasing rare photographs of the 1944 explosion and major fire incidents handled by the Port Fire Service over the decades. The event concluded with a formal photo session and expressions of gratitude for all firefighters who continue to safeguard industrial, maritime, and public infrastructure with unwavering dedication.

As India progresses toward safer ports and industrial zones, the ceremony stands as a reminder of the vital importance of vigilance, preparedness, and continuous advancements in fire protection and emergency response.
