The Modern Times hotel in Vevey opened in 2016 and sits beside Lake Geneva between Lausanne and Montreux. Chaplin’s World, a museum dedicated to Charlie Chaplin is close by and hence this particular Modern Times Hotel location is also a tribute to him with its look and feel. The accommodation is popular, not only for its appeal with tourists, but also as a venue for conferences, banquets and other large-scale events. The high turnover of guests visiting or staying in the 136 rooms and suites make it imperative for services, events and equipment to run smoothly around the clock.

Fabian Büecheler, manager of the Modern Times Hotel in Vevey considered an overhaul of the hotel’s fire safety systems, but he was not familiar with the latest technologies and how they could address the needs of this specific premises. Besides wanting a trustworthy solution for the hotel, he also required a design which blended well into the hotel’s unique décor in some areas. Standard detectors in a classic shape and size, only available in white, would be too distracting with the risk of spoiling the elegant interior design.

Fabian spoke with local fire system integrators and they presented him with cutting-edge fire safety solutions from Bosch – including flush-mount smoke detectors 500 and 520 series,  often referred to as “invisible” fire detectors. Thanks to the latest digital connectivity, these are produced in sleek housing, as well as a wide range of RAL colors. One of the system integrators says, “The Bosch brand stands for trust and reliability. The invisible detectors offer a unique solution that perfectly complements beautiful architectural ceilings. This offers not only functionality, but also maintains the aesthetic integrity of the space.” It was decided that these discreet detectors would be ideal for spaces including the hotel lobby, ground floor corridors, restaurant, meeting rooms and any other areas of the hotel designed to similar architectural standards.

For upper corridors and guest rooms with classic white ceilings, the visual design of the detectors was not so important. But in these and other spaces, their ability to detect more than one fire hazard simultaneously for higher reliability against false alarms was essential. It was therefore decided that another Bosch product, AVENAR multi-sensor detectors from the AVENAR 4000 detector series, would offer the ideal solution for these areas. For example, in the hotel’s restaurant kitchen, the detectors can monitor for smoke and unexpected heat spikes. In boiler rooms and underground parking zones, they can monitor for carbon monoxide leaks as well as temperatures which exceed a certain threshold. In other areas they can provide optical detection for flames or sparks as well as heat detection.

The installation company Altec Sécurité SA ensured all detectors were fitted and networked seamlessly for a fully integrated fire safety solution. The “invisible” detectors, installed discreetly in the ceiling, blend perfectly into each room with no interruption to aesthetics. Fabian was impressed with this – and the modular setup of the Bosch system which is scalable and adaptable for any future extensions or refurbishments at the hotel. He says, “This innovative solution brought new, cutting-edge technology to the project, making it a truly groundbreaking and  attractive offering.” Besides featuring a tasteful and

fitting tribute to the great Charlie Chaplin, the Modern Times Hotel in Vevey now also features a state-of the- art fire safety system to keep the entire premises secure with round-the-clock reliable monitoring.
