Mumbai Fire Brigade Added 16 New Fire Engines to their Fleet

16 engg 1Close on the heals of the Make In India blaze at Girgaum Chowpatty, Mumbai is getting sixteen new advanced fire engines, which will be replacing their old and worn out counterparts in key fire stations across the city. This is the fire brigade's first purchase of these vehicles in the past 13 years.

The spanking new engines was inaugurated the Mumbai fire brigade headquarters at Byculla on 17th Feb 2016.

These fire engines, called first attack or first response vehicles, will be replacing the outdated ones being used at present. They have automatic transmission, making it easier for the driver to manipulate traffic and reach the site faster, drastically reducing response time. It has an anti-lock breaking system, which will prevent the engine wheels from slipping on wet roads. Another interesting feature is its 3,000 litres per minute pump, which will greatly boost the force of water.

16 engg 3These fire engines will be stationed at Worli, Mulund, Andheri, Memonwada, Bhendi bazaar, Nariman Point, Dadar, Gowalia Tank, Dharavi, Dindoshi, Chembur, Kandivali, Borivali, Bandra, Vikhroli and Byculla fire stations.

The fire department has been trying to get new fire engines since 2012, but was unable to do so due to the government's Bharat Stage 4 Emission (BS-4) norms, as no Indian manufacturer was producing vehicles that complied with these norms.

The fire brigade has also proposed 10 mini fire stations across the city to reduce response time.
