Advancing Firefighting Technology : Testing Extinguishing Drones for High-Rise Fires

In recent advancements in firefighting technology, drones are emerging as crucial tools for combating fires in high-rise buildings. A recent test conducted by Latvian startup Aerones in Treffling near Linz showcased the potential of using heavy-duty drones equipped for extinguishing purposes.

Testing the Limits: Extinguishing from Heights

Aerones converted their robust drone into an extinguishing device to evaluate its performance at heights. During the test, the drone successfully reached an altitude of approximately 85 meters, demonstrating its ability to discharge about 100 liters of water per minute with precision. The test also confirmed effective control of the drone, even under challenging operational conditions.

Technical Configuration and Collaboration

The test utilized a Rosenbauer high-pressure extinguishing system, integrating a vehicle with an NH pump capable of delivering 400 liters per minute at 40 bar. The drone, with a diameter of three meters and a carrying capacity exceeding 100 kilograms, was equipped with a Rosenbauer NEPIRO high-pressure nozzle connected to the pump via a dedicated hose line. Power supply was ensured through a parallel power line, ensuring sustained operation independent of battery limitations.

Future Prospects and Challenges

The successful test underscores the potential for “flying nozzles” in firefighting operations, particularly in scenarios involving high-rise fires. However, further development is necessary to optimize operational efficiency and adaptability for real-world firefighting applications. For instance, exploring alternatives like compressed air foam could significantly enhance the reach and effectiveness of extinguishing agents, as demonstrated by Rosenbauer’s SKYCAFS technology capable of reaching heights up to 400 meters.

Looking Ahead: Urbanization and Firefighting Strategies

As urbanization intensifies, the demand for innovative firefighting solutions grows. Fire departments and equipment manufacturers are increasingly focused on developing technologies like extinguishing drones to effectively manage fires in densely populated urban areas. Continued research and development efforts are essential to refine these technologies and integrate them seamlessly into firefighting operations.

The test in Treffling represents a significant step towards realizing the potential of extinguishing drones, highlighting their role in enhancing firefighting capabilities and ensuring safer urban environments in the future.
